National Geographic Ocean Exploration and Discovery 2025 Grants Worth Up to $20,000

The National Geographic Society, in partnership with Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI), has opened applications for the Ocean Exploration & Discovery 2025 Request for Proposals (RFP). This initiative offers grants of up to $20,000 to support early-career scientists in advancing ocean research, conservation, and technology.

Throughout history, legendary explorers like Sylvia Earle and Bob Ballard have inspired a global movement to protect our oceans. Today, the need to explore and safeguard the ocean is more urgent than ever. With much of the ocean still unexplored, this program aims to support innovative projects that bring new insights and solutions to marine science.

About the Partnership

Formed in 2022, the collaboration between the National Geographic Society and Schmidt Ocean Institute was designed to empower the next generation of ocean leaders. This partnership provides funding, mentorship, and access to advanced research facilities, including the state-of-the-art Falkor (too) research vessel, which will conduct expeditions along the east coast of South America in 2026.

The Falkor (too) is equipped with cutting-edge laboratories, underwater robotics, high-performance computing systems, and advanced imaging tools, giving scientists a rare opportunity to carry out groundbreaking marine studies.

Funding & Benefits

Selected researchers will:

  • Receive grants of up to $20,000 USD to cover travel and project costs.
  • Gain a berth aboard the Falkor (too) during its 2026 expeditions.
  • Join the National Geographic Explorer Community, with access to training, capacity-building, and networking opportunities.
