California Local News Fellowship 2026/2028

The California Local News Fellowship is a major state-funded initiative designed to rebuild and support local journalism across California. Launched in 2023, the program has already placed more than 100 early-career reporters in newsrooms statewide. The upcoming 2026–2028 cohort continues this mission by offering opportunities for both reporting fellows and a new stream of editing fellows.

About the Fellowship

The program provides a two-year placement for reporters and a one-year placement for editors. Fellows are embedded in partner newsrooms where they produce community-focused stories that reflect the voices, challenges, and needs of Californians.

  • Reporting Fellows (2026–2028): Start in September 2026 and complete the program in August 2028.
  • Editing Fellows (2026–2027): A new one-year opportunity offered in partnership with the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.
