The Black Mountain Institute (BMI) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is inviting applications for its Shearing Fellowship 2026–2027. This nine-month residential program supports emerging and distinguished writers who have published at least one book with a trade or literary press.
Selected fellows receive a $46,500 stipend paid over nine months, housing in downtown Las Vegas, optional health coverage, and office space at BMI’s UNLV campus. Fellows also gain recognition as a “Shearing Fellow” and become part of a vibrant literary and artistic community.
What the Fellowship Offers

Expectations
While there are no formal teaching duties, the Shearing Fellowship is a “working fellowship.” Fellows are expected to:
- Maintain at least 10 weekly office hours at BMI
- Offer public readings, workshops, or craft talks
- Curate events or provide editorial support to BMI publications
- Develop a personalized community engagement plan with BMI
Eligibility
- Writers who have published at least one book with a trade or literary press (forthcoming books count; self-published books do not)
- Must be available to live in Las Vegas for the full term of the fellowship
- Authors from all backgrounds are welcome to apply

Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:
- A 1–3 page personal statement outlining interest in the fellowship, plans for community engagement, and the writing project(s) to be pursued
- A 10-page writing sample (double-spaced, 12 pt. font)
- A résumé or CV
Finalists will be asked to provide copies of their books.
