The AI for Science Master’s Program at AIMS South Africa is a one-year intensive postgraduate degree designed to train Africa’s next generation of leaders in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced scientific research. Offered as a special stream within the AIMS Master’s in Mathematical Science, this program is delivered in partnership with Google DeepMind, giving students access to world-class expertise and groundbreaking research opportunities.

Applications for the 2026–2027 academic year open on 8 December 2025, with the first-round deadline set for 6 March 2026.

About the AI for Science Master’s Program

Launched in 2023, the program sits at the intersection of AI and major scientific fields, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on research. It is fully residential and highly competitive, welcoming passionate and high-achieving students from across Africa.

The curriculum combines core mathematical sciences with applied AI courses tailored to real-world scientific challenges. Students also engage in research projects guided by leading scientists, researchers, and industry partners.

Google DeepMind Scholarships

Through a major donation from Google DeepMind, the program funds 40 scholars each year, covering:

  • Full tuition
  • Accommodation and meals
  • Computing and equipment needs
  • Access to mentorship from Google DeepMind researchers and engineers

Scholars also benefit from networking opportunities, technical guidance, and exposure to cutting-edge AI research being developed at Google DeepMind.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the 2026–27 cohort, applicants must:

  • Be a resident of Africa at the time of applying*
  • Be a citizen of any African country
  • Have completed a 4-year undergraduate degree, or a 3-year degree plus an Honours year by August 2025 (or December 2025 for southern Africa)
  • Hold a degree in fields such as mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering, computer science, or other computational disciplines
  • Not have previously held an AIMS scholarship

*Residency requirement waived for applicants displaced by war.

Application Process

The selection takes place in two rounds:

1. Online Application (Deadline: 6 March 2026, 11:59 PM SAST)

Applicants must create an account at apply.aims.ac.za and upload:

  • A current CV
  • A 500-word motivation letter
  • Academic transcripts
  • Samples of previous work in mathematical sciences
  • A coding challenge (provided on the portal)

Applicants are advised to start early, as the process is detailed and requires thoughtful preparation.

2. Online Interviews (May 2026)

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for virtual interviews.
A total of 40 students will be selected for the 2026 intake.
