The World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ), in partnership with The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, is offering two prestigious travel fellowships for science journalists to attend the Abel Prize Week in Oslo, Norway, from 25–28 May 2026. This fellowship provides a unique opportunity for journalists to cover one of the world’s most esteemed awards in mathematics, meet leading researchers, and report on groundbreaking scientific discoveries.
About the Abel Prize Travel Fellowships
The Abel Prize Travel Fellowships are designed to support professional science journalists in their coverage of mathematics and fundamental science. Fellows will gain exclusive access to the Abel Prize Week, including the award ceremony, official receptions, and opportunities to interview Abel Prize laureates. The program allows journalists to deepen their understanding of advanced mathematics while producing high-quality reporting for international audiences.

Two fellowships will be awarded for 2026:
- One fellowship for a science journalist from anywhere in the world
- One fellowship for a science journalist based in Europe
What the Fellowship Covers
Selected fellows will receive comprehensive support, including:
- Travel expenses to and from Oslo, reimbursed by WFSJ, including travel health insurance and ground transportation
- Accommodation at a hotel during Abel Prize Week, including breakfast, is covered by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters
- Access to official Abel Prize Week events, including award ceremonies, receptions, and other organized activities (some events include meals or refreshments)
- Opportunities to interview Abel Prize laureates and interact with leading mathematicians
- Assistance with visa documentation if required
This ensures that journalists can fully focus on their reporting without logistical concerns.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a professional science journalist, either full-time staff or freelance
- Have recent experience in science journalism (within the last five years), preferably covering mathematics or fundamental sciences
- Be available to attend the entire Abel Prize Week (25–28 May 2026)
- Work in any format, including print, digital, broadcast, podcasting, or multimedia

- Copy of passport identification page
Selection Process
A jury composed of members of the WFSJ Board or nominees selected by the Board will review applications and choose the two recipients. Selection will be based on professional experience, demonstrated interest in science journalism, and the quality and relevance of submitted work.
