Francis Duru Biography

Francis Ogide Duru was born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State in south-eastern Nigeria. He spent his childhood and early school years in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria for university, and he went on to become one of the most familiar faces of Nollywood’s early golden era.

Fans knew him for his calm screen presence and his ability to move easily between action, drama and family roles. Over a career of more than 30 years, he worked with several generations of Nigerian filmmakers, from the pioneers of the home-video era to today’s cinema directors.

Educational Background

Duru completed both his primary and secondary education in Cameroon. He then moved to Nigeria and gained admission into the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated in 1996.

His time at the University of Port Harcourt shaped both his career and his personal life. It was also there that he met Adokiye, the woman who would later become his wife.

Career and Rise to Fame

Duru made his acting debut in 1989 in Missing Mark, a film directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. The role introduced him to the industry, but he was still regarded as an up-and-coming actor for several years afterwards.

His big break came in 1995 when he played Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the action film created by the late Amaka Igwe. The movie became one of the best-known titles of the Nollywood home-video era, and his performance made him a household name across Nigeria.

He built on that success with roles in Blood Money (1997) and its 1998 sequel, and through the 2000s he appeared in dozens of home-video releases. In later years he adapted to the industry’s shift to cinema and streaming, taking roles in films such as Stigma, Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons, The Good Husband and Blood Vessel.

Beyond acting, Duru was active in industry leadership. In 2010 he was appointed interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). He also worked in theatre and consultancy alongside his screen career.
