He is the head coach of the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay men’s basketball team and also works with Fox Sports. Before moving into coaching and broadcasting, Gottlieb was a highly skilled point guard who twice led the NCAA in assists and played professional basketball in the United States and overseas.

Gottlieb attended Notre Dame, where he began his college basketball career. After leaving Notre Dame, he spent a transfer year at Golden West College. In 1997, he moved to Oklahoma State University, where he became a standout point guard.

Doug Gottlieb began his NCAA basketball journey at Notre Dame, where he quickly became an important player by leading the team in both assists and minutes played. After leaving Notre Dame, he continued his college basketball career at Oklahoma State University. At Oklahoma State, he developed into one of the best passers in college basketball history. He led the NCAA in assists twice and played a major role in helping the team reach the Elite Eight. By the end of his college career, he had collected 947 assists, placing him among the top assist leaders in NCAA records.

After college, Gottlieb moved into professional basketball. He played in the USBL and also spent time playing overseas in France, Russia, and Israel. In addition to his international experience, he participated in the NBA Summer League, which further showcased his playmaking skills.

Gottlieb transitioned into broadcasting in 2002, starting with a radio show in Oklahoma City. His strong personality and deep basketball knowledge helped him gain opportunities at major networks. He joined ESPN, where he hosted GameNight, The Pulse, and made regular appearances on SportsCenter, ESPNU, and other programs. In 2012, he moved to CBS Sports to host The Doug Gottlieb Show and continued working as a college basketball analyst. In 2017, he joined Fox Sports, where he still works as a national radio host and basketball commentator.

His coaching journey began earlier at Golden West College, where he contributed as a redshirt player and assistant. Years later, he coached Team USA to a gold medal at the 2017 Maccabiah Games. On May 14, 2024, he was appointed head coach of the Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball team. His early coaching years at Green Bay have been intense and sometimes controversial, including a viral moment in which he threw a chair out of frustration during a tough loss. His first season ended with a 4–28 record, but the beginning of his second season has shown visible improvement from the team.
