Commonwealth Fully Funded Doctoral Scholarships 2026/2027 in the UK

The Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2026/2027 are now open for applications. These prestigious awards are fully funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and are designed for talented graduates from the least developed and vulnerable states within the Commonwealth. Successful applicants will pursue full-time doctoral study in the UK starting in September/October 2026.

About the Scholarship

The program is administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the UK, as part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP). It supports outstanding individuals who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK and helps them become future leaders, innovators, and researchers in their home countries.

By focusing on development-driven research, the scholarships not only build individual capacity but also strengthen higher education and research institutions across Commonwealth nations.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen or refugee in an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • Be permanently resident in an eligible country.
  • Hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours, or a Master’s degree if their undergraduate qualification is lower.
  • Be ready to start studies in the UK by September 2026.
  • Demonstrate financial need (unable to study in the UK without this scholarship).
  • Submit all required documents (passport/ID, transcripts, references, and a supervisor’s supporting statement).

There is no age limit for this scholarship. Applicants with disabilities may be considered under contextualised nominations.

Eligible Countries

Applicants must be from one of the following Commonwealth countries:
Bangladesh, Cameroon, The Gambia, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Zambia.

Scholarship Benefits

Each scholarship covers:

  • Approved airfare to and from the UK.
  • Full tuition fees (covered by CSC and UK universities).
  • Monthly stipend (£1,452 or £1,781 for London universities).
  • Warm clothing allowance (if applicable).
  • Study travel grant and support for overseas fieldwork.
  • Paid mid-term visit to home country (conditions apply).
  • Family allowances for spouse and children (subject to conditions).
  • Disability support, based on a needs assessment.

Application Process

  • Applications must be submitted via CSC’s online system (CSC Central).
  • Deadline: 14 October 2025 at 16:00 GMT.
  • Applicants must also apply through a nominating body (either a national nominating agency or selected NGOs/charitable organisations).
  • Nominators forward selected candidates to CSC by December 2025.
  • Final results are expected by July 2026.

Applicants are advised to:

  • Save work regularly when using CSC Central.
  • Upload all supporting documents in PDF format before the deadline.
  • Apply early, as the system may be busy close to the deadline.

Selection Criteria

Applications are assessed on three main criteria:

  1. Academic merit and research potential.
  2. Quality of the research proposal.
  3. Potential impact of the research on the development of the applicant’s home country.

Duration and Placement

  • Scholarships are valid for 36 months of full-time study at an approved UK university.
  • Applicants may list up to three preferred universities/supervisors.
  • CSC makes the final decision on placement based on value for money and course suitability.
