UNN Sets Up Scholarships and Grants Directorate to Boost Global Academic Collaboration

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has introduced a dedicated directorate to manage scholarships and research grants, taking a major step toward enhancing its global academic presence.

During a press briefing ahead of the institution’s 54th convocation ceremony, the acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Oguejiofor Ujam, announced the establishment of the Directorate for Grants and Scholarships. The purpose of this new unit, according to Ujam, is to drive international collaboration, support outstanding students, and attract funding opportunities for research across various levels.

“This directorate is now a central hub for sourcing and managing scholarships and grants not only for Nigerian students but for scholars from Africa, Asia, and Europe,” he said. “It’s part of our dream to build a truly global learning and research community.”

To ensure effective management, Ujam confirmed the appointment of a highly skilled director and deputy director to lead the initiative. The directorate has already begun forming partnerships with individuals, corporations, and international organizations, yielding promising outcomes.

Ujam emphasized that this development would help increase the university’s research productivity, uplift students in need, and place UNN in a stronger position in the global academic sphere. “We are nurturing talent and fostering groundbreaking research through this strategic effort,” he added.

UNN Tackles Energy Crisis with Green Solutions

In addition to academic reforms, UNN is also intensifying its commitment to sustainable energy. Prof. Ujam disclosed that the university currently spends over ₦200 million monthly on electricity at the Nsukka campus alone, a major strain on its budget.

To address this, the university is implementing energy-saving measures across all campuses and investing in renewable energy. A significant milestone was achieved recently when UNN signed an MoU with the Rural Electrification Agency to provide 10 megawatts of power to the institution using hybrid and solar solutions.

“These energy initiatives go beyond reducing expenses; they are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power to support our academic and administrative operations,” said Ujam.

54th Convocation Ceremony Highlights

As part of its upcoming convocation, scheduled for July 24th and 25th, 2025, UNN will host a lecture by Mr. Ukandu Eme Ukandu, the MD/CEO of Firstcap Limited and Chairman of First City Monument Bank. He will speak on the theme “Educated to Rise: From Struggle to Global Strength.” The event will be chaired by Chief Akinnola Oladejo, MD/CEO of Prestigious Homes Ltd., Lagos.

With these initiatives, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is not only building a stronger academic future but also reinforcing its commitment to innovation, energy sustainability, and international cooperation.
