Steven Gerrard Biography
Steven George Gerrard was born on May 30, 1980, at Whiston Hospital in Merseyside, England. He is the second son of Julie Ann and Paul Gerrard, he has only one sibling, an older brother Paul.
He began playing football with his local team, Whiston Juniors, where he caught the attention of Liverpool scouts. At just nine years old, he joined the Liverpool Academy in 1989. Growing up, his football idols included John Barnes and Ian Rush from Liverpool and Paul Gascoigne from England.
As a child, Gerrard had an accident where a garden fork pierced his right big toe. In his autobiography, he credited his father and Liverpool Academy director Steve Heighway for helping him avoid unnecessary surgery that could have led to the amputation of his toe.
Steven Gerrard Educational Background
Although Gerrard was not Catholic and lived outside the school’s admission area, he attended Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School in West Derby, Liverpool. His primary school teacher recommended the school because her husband was a PE teacher there and it had a better football program than other schools in the area.
At 17 years old, Gerrard signed his first professional contract with Liverpool, which meant he had to forgo college. However, it seemed like college was never really an option, as football had always been his main goal.

Steven Gerrard Career
Gerrard was discovered by his local top-division football club, Liverpool FC, at the age of nine. At 14, he had trials with several clubs but did not see immediate success and was never selected for the England schoolboys’ team. One of his trials was with Manchester United, which he later admitted in his autobiography was mainly to pressure Liverpool into offering him a Youth Training Scheme contract. He played for Liverpool’s youth team and signed a professional contract at 17. He made his first-team debut in 1998 and became a regular player the following year.
By the 2000–01 season, Gerrard had established himself as a key midfielder. That season, Liverpool won the League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup, and Gerrard was named England’s Young Player of the Year. In 2003, at just 23 years old, he was named Liverpool’s captain.
During the 2004–05 season, he led Liverpool to their first Champions League title in 21 years, playing a crucial role in their famous comeback against AC Milan in the final. The following off-season, he was involved in a high-profile contract dispute with Liverpool and almost transferred to Chelsea, but he ultimately chose to stay. He went on to help Liverpool win the 2005–06 FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup, earning the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year award.
In 2007, Liverpool reached the Champions League final again but lost 2–1 to AC Milan. Gerrard had his best goal-scoring season in 2008–09, netting 24 goals, which earned him the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award.
On January 1, 2015, Gerrard announced he would leave Liverpool after scoring 186 career goals, the fifth-most in the club’s history. He then joined the LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he played for two seasons before retiring from club football in 2016.

National Team
Gerrard played for England’s under-21 team before making his senior national team debut in 2000. He took part in one game during the 2000 European Championship (Euro 2000), but an injury prevented him from playing in the 2002 World Cup. He was a key player in England’s journey to the quarterfinals in both Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.
During the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, Gerrard was named England’s captain. The team reached the tournament but was eliminated in the round of 16. In Euro 2012, England made it to the quarterfinals again. However, the 2014 World Cup was a disappointment, as England was knocked out after just two group-stage matches—their earliest exit ever. Gerrard retired from international football shortly after the tournament.
After retiring as a player, Gerrard stayed in football as a coach. He started as a youth coach at Liverpool in 2017 before becoming the manager of Scottish club Rangers in 2018. In 2021, he was appointed as the manager of Aston Villa in the English Premier League. He was also honored as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2006.
