She has an older sister, Venus Williams, and three half-sisters Yetunde, Lyndrea, and Isha Price from her mother’s previous marriage. Additionally, she has at least seven paternal half-siblings.

Serena began playing tennis at the age of four. One of her mentors was another Richard Williams, a man from Compton who later founded The Venus and Serena Williams Tennis Tutorial Academy.

Serena Williams Career

Serena Williams was coached by her father, Richard Williams, alongside her older sister, Venus. She became a professional tennis player in 1995 at just 15 years old and won her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open. From the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open, she dominated the sport, winning all four major singles titles. This achievement earned her both a career Grand Slam and a non-calendar year Grand Slam, also known as the “Serena Slam.”

A few years later, injuries affected her performance, causing a decline. However, starting in 2007, she gradually regained her form despite ongoing injuries and reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking. In 2012, she made a strong comeback, winning Wimbledon and securing Olympic gold, which completed her career Golden Slam in singles. Between 2012 and 2015, she won eight out of thirteen major singles titles, including four consecutively from 2014 to 2015.

At the 2017 Australian Open, she won her 23rd Grand Slam singles title, surpassing Steffi Graf’s Open Era record. She then took a break from professional tennis due to pregnancy but returned to reach four major finals. In August 2022, Williams announced her decision to step away from professional tennis and played her final match at the 2022 US Open.

Serena Williams Personal Life

On April 19, 2017, Serena Williams shared a photo on Snapchat that drew attention to her stomach, captioned “20 weeks.” This sparked rumors that she was expecting. Later that day, her representative confirmed the news. Since she was already 20 weeks along, it meant she was around eight to nine weeks pregnant when she won the Australian Open earlier that year—an incredible achievement!

Williams grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness but wasn’t officially baptized until 2023. In 2017, she stated that she “never truly followed the faith,” although she frequently expressed gratitude to Jehovah after winning matches. As part of her religious beliefs, she does not observe birthdays.

There was speculation that she had a romantic relationship with Drake in 2011 and again in 2015, but these rumors were never verified.

Serena Williams Sister

Venus Williams was born on June 17, 1980, in Lynwood, California, and just like her sister Serena, she’s made a huge impact on tennis. As of 2025, she’s 45 years old, making her a year older than Serena. She went pro in 1994 and quickly became one of the sport’s biggest stars.

Off the court, Venus has been a strong voice for gender equality in sports, fighting for equal prize money for women players. In 2011, she was diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disease that causes fatigue, joint pain, and dryness in the eyes and mouth. The condition forced her to pull out of the U.S. Open that year, but she didn’t let it stop her. She made an inspiring comeback and has since been open about her journey, raising awareness about the illness to help others going through the same thing.

Even in 2025, Venus is still competing, showing her love for the game and her unstoppable determination. Outside of tennis, she’s also built a successful business, running her own interior design company, V Starr Interiors, and her athletic apparel brand, EleVen.

Serena Williams Life After Retirement

After retiring from professional tennis in 2022, Serena Williams stepped into the beauty industry with the launch of Wyn Beauty in 2024. She wanted to create long-lasting makeup that could handle the intensity of sports.

Serena was deeply involved in the brand’s development, saying, “I was always searching for makeup that held up after hours on the court, so I started mixing products myself and making my own formulas while traveling.” Wyn Beauty, created in partnership with The Good Glamm Group, reflects her bold personality and determination. But the collaboration didn’t happen overnight, Darpan Sanghvi CEO of Good Glamm Group spent a year convincing Serena to join forces.

The result? A high-performance beauty brand with over 91 shades across 10 products, covering face, lip, and eye makeup. With prices ranging from $20 to $30, the brand quickly resonated with makeup lovers.

Beyond beauty, Serena has also made moves in fashion. She teamed up with American retailer Janie and Jack to launch a limited-edition children’s clothing line, inspired by her daughters. The 35-piece collection, designed for newborns to 12-year-olds, blends style and sport, bringing Serena’s legacy into kids’ wardrobes with bright colors, fun prints, and thoughtful details that celebrate her incredible career.
