The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the commencement of registration for the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, specifically designed for candidates outside the traditional school setting. The registration window opened on July 7, 2025, and will close on September 18, 2025.
In an official statement signed by Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, the Council outlined important details about the registration process, eligibility criteria, exam dates, and examination rules.
Eligibility and Biometric Requirements
To be eligible, candidates must have previously attempted the SSCE Internal exam within the last five years. A valid National Identification Number (NIN) is mandatory, and biometric fingerprint data will be collected during offline registration to prevent impersonation. The fingerprints will be re-verified during the exams, and any discrepancies will be treated as attempted impersonation, subject to legal sanctions.
Registration Process and Fees
Candidates must complete their registration online via www.neco.gov.ng, either at an approved cybercafé or a NECO office. The registration fee is ₦40,000, which includes essential exam materials like:
- Four-digit mathematical table
- Waterproof certificate jacket
- Service charges
Payments should be made through approved methods such as ATM cards, POS, or Remita on the NECO portal. Late registration, starting September 19, 2025, will attract an additional ₦10,000 penalty fee.
Exam Schedule and Venue Rules
The 2025 SSCE External examination will begin on Wednesday, September 29, and end on Friday, December 19, 2025. Candidates are required to print their photo card from the portal, which must be signed and stamped by an ordained clergyman, a senior civil servant, or an authorized officer. This card serves as the entry permit to the exam hall.
Candidates must choose an exam centre close to their residence, and once chosen, centres cannot be changed. Arrival at the exam venue should be at least one hour before each paper, and multiple registrations will lead to automatic cancellation of results.
