Rt. Hon. Sabit Adeyemi Ikuforiji is a Nigerian economist, politician, and former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. He was born on August 24, 1958, in Epe, Lagos State, to the late Chief Murtala Atanda Ikuforiji and Alhaja Ibironke Ikuforiji (née Shabi). A devoted Muslim, Adeyemi Ikuforiji is widely known for his visionary leadership, commitment to education, and service to humanity.
He served as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly from 2005 to 2015, making him one of the longest-serving speakers in Nigeria’s democratic history.

Adeyemi Ikuforiji began his education at Local Authority Central School, Epe, before attending Epe Grammar School, where he made history by becoming the only student to earn Division One in the 1975 West African School Certificate Examination out of 105 candidates.
His academic excellence earned him a government scholarship to study abroad. He proceeded to Babeș-Bolyai University and Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies in Romania, where he obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Economics (Economic Planning and Cybernetics) in 1981.

Adeyemi Career
After completing his studies, Ikuforiji returned to Nigeria in 1982 to serve in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), where he chaired the corps members at the Federal Housing Authority.
He worked as a secondary school teacher, Managing Director of Springfield Import and Export Procurement, and later as a lecturer at Wake Technical Community College in North Carolina, USA. He also held various positions at the International Bank for West Africa (AfriBank).
Outside politics, he is deeply involved in community service and education. He founded the Epe Educational Foundation, which provides scholarships to underprivileged students, and established the Ikuforiji Cup, an annual U-17 football competition for youths in Epe.

Adeyemi’s Political Career and Office
Adeyemi Ikuforiji’s political journey began in 1978 as Secretary-General of the National Union of Nigerian Students and later as President of Nigerian Students in Romania.
In 2003, he contested and won the seat to represent Epe Constituency I under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and was elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in December 2005.
He was re-elected Speaker in 2007 and again in 2011, serving until 2015. During his tenure, the Assembly passed over 72 bills, including the Lagos State Waste Management Regulatory Bill and the Advertisement and Signage Bill.
