UJALA African Scholars Program 2026 Fully Funded Opportunity

The UJALA African Scholars Program 2026 is now accepting applications from talented African researchers eager to lead high-quality, policy-relevant impact evaluations in the agricultural sector. This fully funded initiative removes barriers faced by African scholars by providing training, mentorship, funding, and hands-on experience in conducting rigorous randomized evaluations.

Program Launch

The 2026 cohort of the UJALA African Scholars Program will officially launch on September 17, 2025, at the University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) in Rabat, Morocco. The launch event will feature presentations from leading researchers, a detailed overview of the program structure, and networking opportunities with faculty, students, and partners.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a PhD in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or a related empirical field.
  • Demonstrate advanced quantitative skills with proficiency in Stata or R.
  • Have strong English proficiency.
  • Be affiliated with an academic institution. Resident scholars must be based in Africa, while non-resident scholars must have completed high school in Africa and currently work at an academic institution abroad.
  • Focus on development economics, impact evaluation, and agriculture.

Priority will be given to applicants affiliated with UM6P or who have collaborated with OCP-affiliated entities or their partners. (Current J-PAL affiliates and invited researchers are not eligible.)

Selected scholars will receive:

  • Specialized training and workshops, including funded coursework through the Data, Economics, and Design of Policy (DEDP) MicroMasters.
  • Mentorship from J-PAL-affiliated or invited researchers.
  • Opportunities to design independent pilot studies, collaborate with peers, or join ongoing randomized evaluations.
  • Pilot grant funding of up to $75,000 for early-stage randomized control trials.
  • Networking and professional development with visibility at UJALA and partner events.
